No School
There will be no school on Tuesday, November 3rd. Be sure to mark your calendar and make other arrangements.
Exhibitions
An exhibition sign up sheet will be going home tonight. On the form you will need to indicate your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices and return it to school as soon as possible.
Exhibitions will be held the week of November 16th. At this point your child should be finalizing their work for the exhibition project. In talking with many of the students, they have mentioned that they have not started their project and/or they're not sure what their project is about. I am extremely concerned that we'll have quite a few last minute projects. Please let me know if you have any questions about the exhibition project or you need me to assist your child with gathering resources for their project.
Attached to the exhibition sign up sheet you will find a rubric/scoring guide for the exhibition, as well as how the exhibition should go.

This Week in Room 218
Box Tops for Education
Our school is collecting Box Tops for education, which are often found on the tops of dry goods like cereal, or Hamburger Helper. The box tops are due on October 28th. Thank you in advance for your donation!
School Pictures
Kindergarten - 2nd grade will be taking school pictures on October 29th. More details will follow.
AMPP Blog
The AMPP staff has a blog also. Visit their website at http://upaelementaryampp.blogspot.com when you get a chance and add your email address to the subscription box. Instead of getting the AMPPliflyer newsletter like you did last year, they will post information on their blog only.
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. We were able to raise enough money to purchase 30 books on CD for our students to enjoy. Thank you to those of you who came out on Literacy Night, and an even bigger thank you to Mrs. Bayi, Ms. Keyser, and Mrs. Hayes for all of your hard work!!! We couldn't have pulled it off without you!
Writing
This week we are continuing our unit on non-fiction writing. Last week, students published their "How-to" books. This week we will begin writing All-About Books. Please brainstorm with your child a list of topics they know all about it. For example, Karate if they take karate classes, or dolls if they collect dolls.
Math

If the test has a note on it, that says Parent Signature, please review the questions that your child got wrong then sign and send it back. It is critical that they master the items on each of the test, so please take time out to review with them.

Book Fair
Dear Parents and Families,
Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on Wednesday, October 14th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Students will also be able to purchase books during the day.
Reading takes kids further by engaging their imaginations as they experience and
share the joy of reading. Parents can guide their own expedition by attending one
of the exciting events we have planned for our school’s Book Fair.

This week in Room 218
Reading Logs
Today we started out Reading Logs. Look for a blue folder to come home every night (Monday-Thursday) with your child. He/She will need to read for at least 20 minutes per day, and complete the reading log sheet. At the end of the month, students who have completed all of their reading log entries, will receive a Pizza Hut book certificate.
Writing
This week we've started a new writing unit. In this unit, students will focus on writing non-fiction pieces. The unit will last for a month, and the ending products will be a How-To book and an All About Book. So far, students have brainstormed a list of things they know how to do, and might I say that I have a pretty talented group of students. Ask your child what their how-to book is about.
Math
Throughout this week students will work on developing "fact power". They will practice doubles addition facts, +0, +1, and +9 facts. Last week you should have received the Everyday Math Parent Letter that explains this unit and gives some ideas for at home support.
Wikis
Last Friday, we did some work to our Wiki's (editable webpage). Each student added an All About Me section to their page. Please take the time out to check out their pages. We put a lot of work into them. The site is http://gibson218.blogspot.com If you have Internet access at home, PLEASE allow your child to log on and edit their page. Editing can be done by clicking on their edit tab at the top of their individual page. Their usernames are their first initial and last name (ex. lgibson). Their password is wiki.

Our floor is hosting a Family Literacy Night on October 14th, from 5:30-7:00. This event will include a Scholastic Book Fair, our principal dressing in costume to do a read-aloud, helpful hints for reading at home, and a chance to read books from all around the world. Look out for a flyer to come home this week.
Snack
We are about 2 days away from being out of snack. Please either send in an individual snack for your child or donate to our classroom snack supply. (Thank you Mrs. Martin (Maranda's Mom) for sending in pretzels last week!!!)
