Greetings UPA Families:
The time has come for us to prepare for our annual carnival! The carnival will take place on Friday, June 4, 2010. This is a great event that we all look forward to every year. In addition to the great games and food, we are raffling off themed gift baskets. Last year, there were fabulous baskets given away. One of the baskets included items for outdoor fun such as a scooter, safety accessories, Gatorade, hula-hoops, healthy snacks, and much more. We would like for this year’s basket raffle to be even better. Please help us by donating $1 - $2 to your child’s class to help them create a basket that will have families in awe. We are excited about the carnival this year and thank you in advance for supporting UPA and the carnival basket raffle.

5K Walk/Run
Last week you should've received a paper advertising the 5K Walk/Run. This event will take place on May 29th from 12-4 p.m. at Belle Isle. If you and your family plan on participating, please note that the registration is due on May 20th. We're also going to need some parent volunteers for the event. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know.

Classroom Updates
Henry & Mudge Field Trip
The Henry and Mudge field trip is this Thursday. We'll be leaving the building at 9 a.m. and returning at 12 p.m. Students that normally receive a free lunch will receive a bag lunch from the school that day; otherwise, plan on packing a lunch for your child for that day. Due to the limited amount of tickets purchased for the play, we won't be able to bring any parent chaperones.
Jiffy Field Trip
On May 19th, we'll be visiting the Jiffy Plant in Chelsea, MI. The purpose of this trip is to support our Social Studies unit on Michigan's economy. We will need 3 parent volunteers for this trip. Volunteers will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of this trip is $5. A note will be going home very soon to give you more details.
Math
This week in math we are focusing on learning how to use dollars and cents notation both when writing dollar amounts and when entering the numbers into the calculator. If you don't already have one, you may want to pick up a calculator from the dollar store as their homework will ask them to use a calculator periodically.
Exhibitions
Exhibitions will be held during the 2nd week of June. Look for a sign up sheet in your child's homework folder tonight. Please, please, please be sure to let me know if you have any questions/concerns about this round of exhibitions and/or the expectations.
