Next week our floor will be celebrating March Reading Month. There's a different activity planned for each day of next week. The schedule is as follows:
Monday: Poem in Your Pocket Day - Students will need to select a favorite poem to keep in their pocket all day. They should be ready to share it with teachers who will ask to hear it, and receive something special for participating.
Tuesday: Teacher Swap Day - Each teacher will visit another classroom to read aloud a favorite book.
Wednesday: T-shirts with Text Day - Students may wear a t-shirt with words on it over your uniform or with uniform pants. The words on the shirt should be appropriate for school.
Thursday: Read-In in Pajamas Day - Wear your favorite pajamas to school and bring a small pillow or blanket - we're reading in pajamas in the morning. Students must wear shoes with their pajamas.

Classroom Updates
Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
March 17th - Narratives/Report Cards go home
March 24th - Pancake Fundraiser - The first floor will be hosting a pancake fundraiser. A flyer went home with details pertaining this event. Some of the highlights include a table magician and a giveaway of 2 tickets to a Piston's game. The event will take place from 5:30-7 p.m.
March 26th - Free Dress for $1
March 31st - Family Game Night (more details to follow)
Writing
For the remainder of this month in writing, we'll be working on a compare/contrast piece. The focus of this piece will learning to write in a paragraph structure with a topic sentence, 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence. They are comparing and contrasting Cinderella stories from around the world. So far, we've read the Egyptian Cinderella, Rough Face Girl, and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. Ask your child to tell you about one of the stories.
Math
This month in math we'll be focusing on fractions and naming equivalent fractions. Last week, you should have received our family letter that explains in detail some of the strategies and concepts we'll be learning. Be sure to check it out.
Guided Reading
Now that exhibitions are done, we've resumed our regular Guided Reading discussion. This week you should begin seeing books come home on a regular basis, that are at your child's reading level. Remember to incorporate some of the strategies we talked about during your Learning Team Meeting while reading with your child.

Classroom Donations
It would be extremely helpful if you can donate a ream of copy paper. Our supply is getting pretty low.
Thank you Ms. Nelson (Raegan); The Martin Family (Maranda); Ms. Jones (Nailah) for your generous snack donations. They were very much appreciated. If you have not donated snack to our classroom yet, now's your chance. We have snack everyday in our room. If you haven't donated in a while you either need to send in a donation or send a snack with your child. We have about 5 more days worth of snack right now.

Updates
Reading Logs/Book-it Program
As a reminder, your child should be reading at least 20 minutes per night and recording his/her thoughts in their reading log. Once they've read you should verify that they've read and read over their comments, then initial in the appropriate spot. In the month of January we had 4 students out of the 16 in our class complete their reading log. These students were Nailah Jones, Raegan Williams, Jordyn Hill and Maranda Martin. All 4 of these ladies received a Pizza Hut book-it certificate to reward their efforts. Keep it up!
Field Trip
On Thursday we will have our in-school Lego Field Trip. If you have not already done so, please send it the $4 fee to cover the cost of the trip. Thank you in advance to Ms. Miller (Romantic's mom) for volunteering to help out.
Cell Phones
We've had a few students bring operable cell phones to class. Please be sure to have your child leave their phone at home, as we have a phone in our classroom that they have access to.
Writing
We just finished our unit on Many Moment Stories. A many moment story is a personal narrative story, in which students recall all of the details within an event that's happened in their life. The stories that students wrote were really good, many of them have done well with recalling details and getting them onto paper. One thing that we're all working on is using punctuation appropriately and using more than just periods in our writing.
Math
We are wrapping our 6th unit in math. This week students will be working on learning the beginning stages of multiplication, including arrays. Now would be a good time to purchase/make multiplication fact cards to practice facts at home.
Reading
This week I'll be working on retesting students; therefore, they will be pulling books from our class library to take home rather than getting Guided Reading books from me.
