Reading Logs
Reading logs are a part of your child's every day homework, it should be done in addition to their math homework every night. This month we only had 1 student who completed her reading log in it's entirety. (Good job, Nailah!) As a class we discussed some solutions to this big problem. We decided that students who don't have their reading logs done will lose their recess. It is critical that everyone reads at least 20 minutes per night and produces a thoughtful response.

Calendar Change
The Professional Development date for the month of May has been changed. It will be May 21st. We'll also be out of school in observance of Memorial Day on May 31st. Please be sure to mark your calendars accordingly.

Classroom Updates
Field Trip
On May 6th, we'll be heading to the Southfield Millenium Center. The cost of the field trip is $4 which is due on Monday, April 26th. Please be sure to return the half slip of paper that you received so that we have an accurate lunch count.
Free Dress
Next Friday, April 30th is a Free Dress for $1 day.
Exhibitions
Exhibitions are coming up pretty soon. By now your child should have chosen a person who has made history to focus their biography project on. Remember that this project has a lot of details and should not be left until the last minute start. Please let me know if you need any help finding resources for this project..
Writing
April is National Poetry Month. Our class started a poetry unit at the beginning of this month which is going great! This is my first time teaching a group of students how to write free-verse poetry. I couldn't have picked a better group to do this with. They all have some fabulous ideas. Most recently they wrote a poem titled Inside My Heart. Ask your child today to tell you about their poem and what their strong feeling was.
Math
We are now in our 10th math unit which focuses on money, specifically making change and solving number stories that involve money. While you're out and about in the coming weeks, have your child help you count cash and coins when paying for an item. This gives them great real-world experience and helps them understand the importance of being able to count money.

A much overdue thank you goes to the Bayi family, Ms. Wells and Mrs. Hudgens who all gave generous snack donations this month. They were greatly appreciated!!!

Library Visit
This Friday (weather permitting) we'll be walking to the Main Library. They are hosting a $0.25 book sale. All books are sold for $0.25. If you would like for your child to participate in the sale, please send them with money. They are to wear their uniform clothes and may wear gym shoes.

March is Reading Month
Next week our floor will be celebrating March Reading Month. There's a different activity planned for each day of next week. The schedule is as follows:
Monday: Poem in Your Pocket Day - Students will need to select a favorite poem to keep in their pocket all day. They should be ready to share it with teachers who will ask to hear it, and receive something special for participating.
Tuesday: Teacher Swap Day - Each teacher will visit another classroom to read aloud a favorite book.
Wednesday: T-shirts with Text Day - Students may wear a t-shirt with words on it over your uniform or with uniform pants. The words on the shirt should be appropriate for school.
Thursday: Read-In in Pajamas Day - Wear your favorite pajamas to school and bring a small pillow or blanket - we're reading in pajamas in the morning. Students must wear shoes with their pajamas.

March 24th - Pancake Fundraiser - The first floor will be hosting a pancake fundraiser. A flyer went home with details pertaining this event. Some of the highlights include a table magician and a giveaway of 2 tickets to a Piston's game. The event will take place from 5:30-7 p.m.
March 26th - Free Dress for $1
March 31st - Family Game Night (more details to follow)
Writing
For the remainder of this month in writing, we'll be working on a compare/contrast piece. The focus of this piece will learning to write in a paragraph structure with a topic sentence, 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence. They are comparing and contrasting Cinderella stories from around the world. So far, we've read the Egyptian Cinderella, Rough Face Girl, and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. Ask your child to tell you about one of the stories.
Math
This month in math we'll be focusing on fractions and naming equivalent fractions. Last week, you should have received our family letter that explains in detail some of the strategies and concepts we'll be learning. Be sure to check it out.
Guided Reading
Now that exhibitions are done, we've resumed our regular Guided Reading discussion. This week you should begin seeing books come home on a regular basis, that are at your child's reading level. Remember to incorporate some of the strategies we talked about during your Learning Team Meeting while reading with your child.
