Classroom Update

It seems like I haven't given you all an update in quite sometime, so here it goes.......


Exhibitions
We wrapped our exhibitions last week. I must say that they all were really great. I learned a lot about a variety of topics from eagles to football, Hawaii and even the human body. The next round of exhibitions will occur in Mid-March. At home you and your child should begin brainstorming ideas for the project now, so that you can avoid a last minute headache.

Math
This week we've begun a new math unit, which focuses a lot on counting money and providing real-world examples. When you're out at the store, allow your child to calculate how much money to give the cashier, and how much change they should get back. Remember to be patient, this is a complicated skill to master.

Guided Reading
This week we've started Guided Reading again. Your child will bring a book home on a nightly basis that they should either read to themselves or to an adult. If they are reading silently, be sure to have a discussion about the book using the form I sent home during our first learning team meeting. If you need another copy, let me know.

Holiday Concert

The following is a note from Mrs. Melkonian, our music teacher, regarding the December 16th Holiday Concert.


Dear UPA Elementary Families,
For our upcoming Holiday Concert, we are going to celebrate family by including some of your favorite family pictures. All UPE students are participating in the show, so we hope to have as many families as possible represented. One photo per family, please.

Digital Photos may be sent to Mrs. Melkonian: smelkonian@uprep.com

Hard copies of photos may be given to your child's classroom teacher or put in Mrs. Melkonian's mailbox. Photos will be returned if they are clearly marked.

Snack

We have completely run out of snack. As it stands there about 5 students who bring in their own snack daily, which leaves the remaining 11 students to eat the classroom supply of snacks. This causes us to go through snack fairly quickly. Please either send your child with their own individual snack, or donate a bulk amount of snack to our classroom. Thank you!!!!

FYI

A couple of FYI items:

I've given the students a week off from Reading Logs so that they can have some extra time to practice their exhibitions.

Guided Reading will resume the week after exhibitions, so that I can reassess their reading levels.

Jeopardy

Our village played a really fun game of Michigan History Jeopardy yesterday. All of the questions in the jeopardy game are items that we've discussed in class.

Reading Logs
